Curious Black-footed Albatross, Midway Atoll

David Hartley

I was born in Liverpool, England. At the age of sixteen I found a passion for digital electronics and computers. That led me to university, obtaining a first class honors degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and then a Ph.D in Electronics and Computer Science.

After academia, I worked in the Midlands, then in Christchurch, New Zealand, and finally Silicon Valley in California. My expertise was embedded multimedia systems and hardware/software interaction. Companies ranged from startups to large multi-nationals. The last thirteen years of my career were at Apple, Inc, working on all Apple silicon products with a display (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Apple Silicon Macs, Vision Pro).

My passion is photography, specializing in nature and landscape photography. I love being out in nature and traveling; there is so much to see and experience beyond the computer screen.

Equipment

I’ve shot Nikon since I bought my first 35mm film camera (the F601, aka N6006). Then onto an F90X (N90s) and finally, a beloved F5. Moving to digital, I went from D2h through D5 and D850. I now shoot mirrorless with the Z9 and Z8. Infrared is with a converted D800E. Lenses range from fisheye 8-15mm through to super telephoto (600 and 800). Preference is wide angle; hence you will usually find me with my Z14-24mm or my F-mount PC-E 19mm and PC-E 24mm lenses.
